16 Books For A 10th Anniversary Trip

Published by The Connected Reader on

This past week the stars aligned and my husband and I were able to take a trip to Sedona, Arizona and the Grand Canyon for our 10th wedding anniversary.

Side note: I think I might be a desert person now and I understand why artists and writers live there.

Side side note: I’m not really a nature person, but I teared up upon first sight of the Grand Canyon. It somehow distorts your depth perception while putting your life in perspective like a Magic Eye book for grownups.

For my fellow parents of young children out there: In order for us to take this childless trip, my in-laws came from Chicago to stay with our three children. My husband and I were leaving on Sunday evening. At 2pm on Sunday afternoon my children’s school district and daycare announced that they would be closed on Monday for the Astros’ victory parade. Live shot of my face reading this news:😑.

Staying home with the kids all day on Monday was not the plan, but my amazing in-laws rallied and, despite this last-minute schedule change and sniffles all around, we were able to go. Again, there is not enough gratitude in the world for my in-laws AND you cannot imagine how fast we drove away from the house to try to avoid another wrench in our plans.

One of my favorite things about traveling is planning the books to take on the trip; finding the right books to complement the vibe of a trip is just perfection.

As I thought about this trip, I was reflecting on how my 10th wedding anniversary marks a milestone not just in my partnership with my husband, but in our personal lives and our family life. We are in our 40s (or very close); we are starting the transition from little kids to bigger little kids; we are making changes in our professional work after long careers in education (and four layoffs between the two of us) to better align to our personal goals and the needs of our family right now.

This season of life has been a lot, and as I embark on a new season I couldn’t help but capture the feelings of this one in a book list. If you are in a similar season of life – even if you aren’t able to get away for a trip to commemorate it – check out this list.

Just checked out Field Notes on Love from the library – thanks for the recommendation. And sooooo glad for you that you got away on that trip to the desert. <3

Yay! Thanks, friend. Field Notes is so adorable. You will want to go on an epic European train trip after you read it.
